Vinyl-wrapped doors are everywhere in UK kitchens. They look smart when they’re new, but a common problem as they age is the wrap lifting, bubbling or peeling away — usually around the oven, the kettle or the dishwasher. If that’s your kitchen, here are your honest options.
What is a vinyl-wrapped door?
A vinyl-wrapped (or “foil”) door is an MDF door shaped by machine, with a thin plastic film heat-pressed and glued over the front and edges. You can usually spot one by its smooth, seamless rounded edges and by the plain, slightly different back.
Why the wrap peels
- Heat: ovens without proper heat shields, and kettles or toasters parked under wall units, soften the glue.
- Steam: dishwashers opened straight after a cycle blast the doors above and beside them.
- Age: over time, the glue simply lets go — often starting at a corner or edge.
And once one door starts lifting, others of the same age often follow.
Your options
1. Re-glue the wrap
Fine for one small lifted corner, but it’s usually a short-term fix — the heat that caused it is still there, and the rest of the wrap is the same age.
2. Replace the doors
New doors solve the problem but mean matching sizes, hinges and style exactly — and paying for the doors plus fitting.
3. Remove the wrap and respray
Painting over peeling vinyl doesn’t work — the paint just lifts with the film. What can work is removing the wrap completely, preparing and priming the MDF underneath, and spraying the doors. Whether that’s the right route depends on the door: the MDF core needs to be sound, and some door designs leave a rougher surface under the wrap than others.
Our honest advice
Every wrapped kitchen is different, so we’d rather look before we promise anything. Send us photos of the peeling doors and a couple of close-ups of the edges through our online quote form, and we’ll tell you straight which option makes most sense for your kitchen — even if that isn’t a respray.
Whatever you choose, deal with the cause too: fit a heat shield beside the oven, move the kettle out from under the wall units, and let the dishwasher steam clear before opening it fully.
We work predominantly in Hampshire
We’re a local, family-run team based near Botley, so most of our kitchens are in Hampshire and just over its borders — Winchester, Southampton, Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford, Hedge End, Romsey, Andover, Basingstoke, Alton, Petersfield, Fareham, Waterlooville and the villages in between.
Further afield? Get in touch anyway — we’ll happily travel for the right kitchen.
